The roadrunner was designated the official state bird of New Mexico in 1949. The Hopi and Pueblo Indians believe the roadrunner provides protection against evil spirits. Though this bird can fly, it often prefers to scamper through the environment using swift feet leaving its unique tracks in the desert dust.
